SAD NEWS: Dallas Cowboys Officially Release 4 Veteran Players in the Context of Mike McCarthy’s Team Rebuilding Plan Being Increasingly Pushed Forward

Posted May 27, 2026

Dallas, TX — The Dallas Cowboys are making tough roster decisions as positional competition becomes increasingly fierce during the OTAs phase and training camp preparation.

According to sources from league circles, the Cowboys have officially cut 4 players from the projected 53-man roster as the team is actively rebuilding and optimizing both sides of the ball for the 2026 season.

The players being cut include:

  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling (WR)
  • Terence Steele (OL)
  • Jonathan Bullard (DL)
  • Luke Schoonmaker (TE)

These moves clearly show that the Cowboys are strongly accelerating the process of roster youth movement and optimization after a 2025 season full of fluctuations (although the results were good, the team still failed to achieve the deeper playoff goals as expected).

One of the most surprising names is Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Although he has contributed steadily on special teams and possesses experience, Valdes-Scantling has become a victim of extremely strong competition at the wide receiver position. The Cowboys currently possess a very crowded receiving room with:

  • CeeDee Lamb
  • George Pickens
  • Parris Campbell
  • KaVontae Turpin
  • Ryan Flournoy

In addition, rookies such as Jonathan Mingo, Tyler Johnson, and some UDFAs are creating significant buzz during the offseason. The team highly values the long-term upside and physicality of the younger players.

On defense, the Cowboys are also parting ways with defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard. His position has become increasingly unstable after the team added depth through the draft and free agency (Quinnen Williams, Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark along with the return of Sam Williams and additions like Donovan Ezeiruaku, Jay Toia). Bullard has not yet shown the explosive impact the team had hoped for.

One loss on the offensive side is Terence Steele (Offensive Lineman). After adding Tyler Guyton and developing young tackles like Nathan Thomas and Trevor Keegan, the Cowboys have decided to prioritize flexibility and the potential of younger players. Steele was unable to separate himself from the highly competitive depth chart group.

Perhaps the most shocking name is Luke Schoonmaker (TE). Although he is a veteran in the locker room, he no longer has a place as the team already has Jake Ferguson, Princeton Fant, Brevyn Spann-Ford, and promising rookies like Michael Trigg. The youth movement in the tight end group is a clear priority.

These changes reflect the Cowboys' determination to continue building a younger, faster, and more explosive roster under head coach Mike McCarthy. With Dak Prescott at the center, McCarthy and the coaching staff are fiercely creating a highly competitive roster for the 2026 season.

Just 12 Hours After Baltimore Parted Ways With a Veteran Superstar, Dallas Cowboys Received an Attractive Offer From a 13,000-Yard Offensive Weapon Looking for Another Championship
Dallas, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys may suddenly find themselves at the center of one of the most intriguing veteran storylines of the NFL offseason. Only hours after the Baltimore Ravens officially moved on from a longtime offensive star, league speculation immediately began intensifying around Dallas’ growing interest in adding another proven weapon. Multiple insiders now believe the Cowboys have emerged as one of the strongest potential destinations for veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins entering the 2026 season. Even more surprising, several reports suggest Hopkins himself has significant interest in joining Dallas as he searches for another opportunity to compete for a championship. The veteran receiver quickly became one of the most recognizable names available on the market following the end of his brief tenure with Baltimore. Almost immediately, rumors connecting Hopkins to the Cowboys exploded across NFL media and social platforms nationwide. League observers believe the Cowboys remain aggressive in searching for another experienced target capable of elevating the offense during critical moments late in games. Dallas already possesses explosive young talent throughout the receiving corps, but many analysts believe another veteran presence could completely transform the offense. The potential addition of Hopkins would also help reduce defensive pressure placed on CeeDee Lamb while creating more balance inside Dallas’ passing attack. Despite being deep into his NFL career, Hopkins remains one of football’s most respected route runners and contested catch specialists. Few active receivers possess the same level of composure, physicality, and reliability during difficult red zone situations and third down opportunities. Throughout his remarkable professional career, Hopkins has accumulated 13,295 receiving yards, 85 receiving touchdowns, five Pro Bowl selections, and multiple All Pro honors. Those achievements place him among the most productive and consistent receivers of his generation across the National Football League. Cowboys coaches reportedly believe Hopkins could bring leadership, stability, and championship experience to a roster continuing to evolve around younger offensive stars. Dallas is also expected to lean heavily on its passing attack this season as the organization attempts to remain among the NFC’s elite contenders. Several league executives reportedly believe Hopkins still possesses enough explosiveness and football intelligence to contribute at a very high level. Inside Dallas, there is growing belief that adding another trusted veteran target could dramatically improve offensive efficiency during key third down situations. Fans throughout Cowboys Nation reacted strongly once rumors involving Hopkins began spreading online earlier this week. Many supporters believe the combination of Hopkins and Dallas’ younger offensive weapons could create one of the most dangerous receiving groups in the conference. Others view the possible move as another major statement that Dallas remains fully committed to chasing a Super Bowl immediately rather than entering any rebuilding phase. Hopkins also appears highly motivated to prove he can still perform at an elite level despite growing questions surrounding age and long term durability. “I’m coming to Dallas to prove that the tank is still full and the hunger is even greater. This city respects toughness, and I’m ready to give Cowboys Nation every single yard I have left.” At this moment, no official agreement has been confirmed between Hopkins and the Cowboys organization. Still, the growing momentum surrounding Dallas’ interest continues generating enormous excitement throughout the NFL landscape heading toward training camp.
