San Francisco, California – Jim Harbaugh, former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers (2011–2014), who is now leading the Los Angeles Chargers, is aggressively pushing his new team to execute a trade to acquire Brandon Aiyuk — one of the players he values most highly from his time in San Francisco.

Harbaugh, who knows the 49ers organization inside and out after four seasons as head coach, believes Aiyuk is the perfect piece to elevate the Chargers’ passing attack and fits seamlessly into the physical, run-first offensive system he has always built.
Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers’ first-round selection (pick 25) in the 2020 NFL Draft, has shown tremendous potential even though he has not fully exploded statistically following his injury.
After five seasons (primarily through 2024), he has recorded more than 4,800 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns while establishing himself as one of the best blocking wide receivers in the NFL. Aiyuk is known for his “freakish” athleticism, sharp route-running, and unrelenting competitive spirit.
Currently, Aiyuk still has three years left on his contract (2026–2028), but the 49ers voided all $27 million in guaranteed money for 2026 at the end of 2025 amid disputes over his absence from team meetings and ACL rehabilitation. The relationship between Aiyuk and the front office has deteriorated severely.
With the wide receiver room quite crowded and heavy salary-cap pressure, the 49ers have long made it clear they want to “move on” from Aiyuk (GM John Lynch once stated “he may have played his last game for us”).

However, to this day the team has still not found a definitive solution (trade or release), largely because cutting him before June 1 would create significant dead-cap hits. As a result, any reasonable offer would make it extremely difficult for San Francisco to turn down.
For the Chargers, landing Aiyuk would allow Jim Harbaugh to reunite with a physically dominant wide receiver who excels at blocking in support of the run game, while creating a dangerous duo alongside Justin Herbert and adding both depth and firepower to the offense.
Harbaugh believes Aiyuk’s athletic traits and mentality will make him a long-term cornerstone in the Los Angeles offensive scheme.
Potential trade package: The Chargers could send the 49ers a second-round pick (around 40–50) along with a third-round pick or another depth player. This is viewed as fair value for a wide receiver with high upside.
Although trading Aiyuk is not the 49ers’ top priority (the team still holds complete control over his future), the salary relief and extra draft capital could make it hard to refuse — especially given how strained the relationship between both sides has become.
As the 2026 offseason heats up, all eyes are on the potential negotiations between the 49ers and Chargers. Acquiring Brandon Aiyuk would be a bold statement by Jim Harbaugh in his first year with the Chargers, instantly upgrading the offense and boosting their competitiveness in the AFC West.
This deal could significantly reshape the offenses of both teams for years to come and promises to be one of the most attractive trades of the 2026 NFL offseason.
