Santa Clara, California - One of the most emotional symbols in San Francisco 49ers history officially said goodbye to the NFL through tears Monday morning.

According to an announcement from the 49ers, Kevin Givens signed a symbolic one-day contract in order to retire wearing the jersey of the franchise he spent his entire career representing.
The news immediately left the San Francisco Bay Area community emotional because Givens had long become more than just a player throughout his unforgettable 49ers journey.
Over seven seasons in San Francisco, Givens earned recognition as one of the most reliable and versatile rotational defensive tackles in the modern NFL era. The undrafted free agent from Penn State quietly developed into a trusted depth piece and fan favorite.
Throughout his professional career, Givens accumulated a total of 92 tackles, 8 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries while playing multiple roles along the defensive line in countless important games. He spent time as a nose tackle, three-technique, and even contributed on special teams packages during key matchups.
However, that emotional football journey finally came to an end following the serious pectoral injury Givens suffered during the 2025 NFL training camp.
Multiple internal sources reportedly stated the lengthy rehabilitation process created enormous physical and emotional challenges for Givens over the past several difficult months.

What devastated the 49ers community even more was the report that Givens reportedly decided to sell his Bay Area home to help cover medical recovery expenses.
The family home had been considered Givens’ sanctuary throughout many of his seasons playing football in San Francisco.
According to several local reports, Givens quietly placed the property on the market while his NFL future remained completely uncertain behind the scenes.
Many 49ers fans admitted they were heartbroken learning that a player who sacrificed nearly everything for the franchise had been forced into such a painful decision.
Even though he was never a full-time starter, Givens still remained one of the most beloved players in the hearts of 49ers fans for his work ethic, versatility, and “next man up” mentality.
The most emotional moment came when Givens walked onto the 49ers practice field one final time while teammates, staff members, and former players applauded continuously around him.
Several people inside the 49ers organization reportedly broke down in tears as Givens embraced members of the coaching staff before the private retirement ceremony Monday morning.
“San Francisco gave me far more than football ever could. This organization gave me a family, gave me belief, and gave me the greatest memories of my life. If I had to sacrifice everything just to wear a 49ers jersey one more time, I would still do it again without a single regret.”
Following the emotional speech, 49ers social media quickly filled with highlight videos and unforgettable moments from Givens’ incredible career in San Francisco.
Many fans especially revisited his sack celebrations, gritty run stops, and the fearless competitive spirit he brought onto the field every single time he stepped between the lines.
Even though his career did not end with a Super Bowl ring, Kevin Givens still leaves the NFL as a true legend in the hearts of the 49ers community.
