Washington Reportedly Knows More About Brandon Aiyuk’s Injury Situation Than the 49ers — San Francisco Is Losing Patience as the Star Continues Destroying His Own Chances to End the Long Running Drama

Posted May 20, 2026

Santa Clara, California — The future of Brandon Aiyuk with the San Francisco 49ers continues becoming one of the most tense and complicated storylines of the NFL offseason.

While speculation continues linking Aiyuk to the Washington Commanders, the actual relationship between the player and San Francisco appears to be deteriorating even further behind the scenes.

Sources around the league indicate the 49ers still cannot make any clear decision regarding Aiyuk’s future because of the unusual circumstances surrounding his current situation.

The biggest issue remains Aiyuk’s continued absence from the team facility during one of the most important stretches of the offseason program.

His lack of communication and refusal to consistently participate in rehabilitation work alongside the organization are reportedly creating growing frustration internally throughout the 49ers building.

During a recent appearance on Rich Eisen’s show, NFL insider Mike Garafolo delivered an extremely blunt assessment of the ongoing standoff.

According to Garafolo, the 49ers previously gave Aiyuk multiple opportunities to repair the relationship and preserve the guaranteed portions of his current contract.

However, the veteran insider believes Aiyuk has personally pushed himself into an increasingly difficult position through several recent decisions surrounding his rehabilitation process.

“If Aiyuk had shown up for rehab and continued working with the team, the 49ers could have kept the guarantees in his contract intact. They also would’ve been able to monitor his recovery closely.”

“But no, he didn’t do that. And that decision basically slammed shut the final opportunity San Francisco was willing to give him. People need to remember the 49ers control this situation, not Aiyuk.”

Those comments immediately generated widespread debate as more people throughout the NFL began questioning exactly what direction Aiyuk’s professional future is heading toward.

Garafolo also revealed that Aiyuk is currently communicating with only an extremely limited group of people, making it difficult for many around the league to understand his situation.

According to the insider, Washington may actually possess a better understanding of Aiyuk’s health and recovery progress than the 49ers themselves at this point.

That revelation surprised many league observers, especially considering San Francisco previously wanted direct involvement in monitoring the wide receiver’s rehabilitation process firsthand.

Inside the organization, the 49ers reportedly still want Aiyuk physically present so they can properly evaluate both his conditioning and his willingness to cooperate moving forward.

So far, that still has not happened, leaving the entire situation frozen in uncertainty as tensions continue quietly escalating throughout the offseason.

Meanwhile, San Francisco’s OTAs officially begin on May 27 before mandatory minicamp arrives shortly afterward during the opening weeks of June.

Many analysts now believe the next several days could determine whether the relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers can realistically still be repaired.

What makes the situation even more complicated is the growing belief that Aiyuk currently possesses very little leverage against the organization controlling his NFL future.

For San Francisco, this prolonged offseason drama is no longer simply about contracts or injuries — it is rapidly becoming a test of accountability, trust, and commitment.

Adam Schefter: Patriots Send Massive Trade Offer for 49ers WR Jacob Cowing After June 1
San Francisco, California — The New England Patriots continue to show strong aggression in the trade market by sending an attractive trade proposal to the San Francisco 49ers to acquire wide receiver Jacob Cowing. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Patriots have officially made a major offer to the 49ers after June 1 — the period when teams can trade more flexibly without affecting the salary cap. Proposed Trade Package: Patriots receive: Jacob Cowing 49ers receive: 2027 second-round pick + 2027 fourth-round pick Multiple sources indicate that New England views Jacob Cowing as one of their top priority targets to add speed and explosiveness to the offense, supporting the long-term development of quarterback Drake Maye. With the urgent need for young weapons capable of making big plays, the Patriots are being extremely aggressive in upgrading the wide receiver position. Jacob Cowing, 25 years old, is highly regarded for his elite speed, reliable hands, and especially his excellence as a punt returner. Although his receiving role has not been fully utilized in San Francisco due to the team’s deep receiver room, he is still considered a young talent with high upside and the ability to change games. Situation with the 49ers: The San Francisco 49ers are currently in win-now mode with a very deep receiver group (Mike Evans, Ricky Pearsall, Christian Kirk, De’Zhaun Stribling…). Jacob Cowing is entering the third year of his rookie contract and will become a free agent in 2028. Therefore, if they receive a quality draft pick offer, the 49ers could consider trading him to gain assets for building the future roster. However, the 49ers still view Cowing as a “gem” in their roster and will only accept a trade if the Patriots significantly increase their offer. Currently, the package of a second-round pick plus a fourth-round pick is considered quite attractive, but the 49ers may demand more to let Cowing go. This is becoming one of the most watched negotiations of the offseason, as the Patriots continue to find every way to build around Drake Maye, while the 49ers must weigh the decision between keeping a young talent or acquiring valuable draft capital.
